Leather Strop Practice: Why Do You Need0

What Is Stropping Practice for A Wood Carver?

Stropping is one of the useful techniques for servicing tools with blades, which is necessary to maintain these blades in good condition. This practice is used when it is necessary to eliminate minor problems with the edge of the blade.

What Is It for?

There are four functions that stropping performs:

  • Restore the edge of the blade.
  • Polishing.
  • Abrasion.
  • Coating.

 If you want to have the sharpest knife, or other tool with a blade, then stropping is really a must. The blades should always be cared for, and sometimes sharpening is too much for minor damage. It is for such cases that stropping is ideal.

In addition, this technique should not only be applied to work tools. It will also be useful for razor blades, ordinary kitchen knives and so on. In the case of razors, if the blade is damaged or blunt, stropping is REQUIRED, otherwise the person may injure their skin.

How to use Leather Strop?

  • Apply the blade at the smallest angle to the strop surface;
  • Run the blade along the taut strop, pressing lightly;

    where are the directions on how to use the leather strope and the polishing stone? Move toward the edge or away from it and what angle? Do you rub the polishing stone on the leather strope and then move the blade over it in a direction towards the the knife edge or away and at what angle? Just getting started. Tom T

      Hi, Tom,

      Thanks for the comment! We have a video tutorial on how to use a Leather strop here: https://youtu.be/_u2sUMkVvW4
      Just follow all the steps that you see in the video.
      In addition, before applying the polishing compound to the leather strop, you need to apply honing oil to the smooth side of the leather and wait until it is a little bit absorbed (15-20 minutes). After that, any compound will be easier to apply and better to stick.

      Moreover, I sent you an email with the sharpening eBooks

      Wish you enjoyable woodcarving!

      Please let us know if you have any questions/need any help!
