V-shaped Tool

by BeaverCraft Team 22 Jul 2025 0 Comments
Term: V-shaped Tool

A V-shaped tool (also called a V-tool or parting tool) is a wood carving chisel with a V-shaped cutting edge. Its blade is split into two angled sides meeting at a point, forming a V. Carvers use it to cut narrow grooves and crisp lines into the wood – for example, outlining a design or adding fine textured details.

Beginners appreciate the V-tool for adding detail. Instead of carving thin lines with a knife, a V-shaped chisel makes this task easier and more accurate. At BeaverCraft, we explain that using a V-tool lets you carve lines, details, and corners without struggling, simplifying what would otherwise be difficult freehand work. It effectively “separates” areas of the wood by outlining shapes and adding texture in one stroke.

We offer V-tools in several sizes (angles) so you can pick how wide or narrow a V-cut you need. In practice, many of our beginner carving sets include a compact V-tool to jumpstart detailing. Overall, the V-shaped tool simplifies intricate cuts: with each V-gouge stroke, you get a consistent groove or outline. Our tutorials and kits encourage learning to use the V-tool early, since it speeds up carving and makes intricate patterns much easier.
