Carving Palm Tools

Wood carving palm tools may become the thing differentiating your work out of all the rest, the thing that makes your skills really special. How so? Well, carving with palm tools does add the incomparable amount of details to the work and change your carving processes by making them easier for you to handle. As you enjoy doing less work and getting the same result, you get more time for creativity and exploring what you can and can’t do (or what you want to do). That leads to more interesting projects coming out of your hands. Not even saying about the improved quality of the carvings themselves.

So what are the carving palm tools types? Do there exist the differences between them and how to decide which carving palm tools to buy?

Wood carving palm tools

It’s worth mentioning firstly that all of our tools are meant as palm tools and not for use with mallet or hammer. So if you prefer using those things for your carving, it won’t be a very good idea to match them with BeaverCraft instruments.

Now that we’ve established that and you are still here – we can go on about carving palm tools types. Anything that is used for whittling without electricity or rough force (as a hammer, for example) can be considered a palm instrument. However, it’s mostly mentioned as a name for various chisels, different carving tools palm gouges and so on.

The beauty of these instruments is in the detail – that’s what they are used for, after all. Of course, everything depends on carving palm tools quality. If you get dull or badly manufactured tools, they won’t bring you much joy. But let’s not talk about bad stuff. We’re hoping to give you the best wood carving palm tools and as useful instructions on them as we can think. By the way, we’ve released a video on carving with palm tools on our YouTube channel – you’re welcome to watch if you haven’t yet.

Palm instruments are great for details, corners and angles that your carving knife won’t fit in. They are mostly used for adding to the volume, fine lines and complexity of the pattern. So if you require that detailing and thoroughness in your work, it may be a great idea to purchase a carving tools palm set.

Carving tools palm set

What characterizes a palm instrument and how to select the best wood carving palm tools for yourself? When surfing for palm instruments or sets of tools at our website, you’ll see the characteristic “sweep”. It means the depth of the tool – the bigger that sweep is, the deeper lines you’ll be able to get with that instrument. So, simply for comparison, a flat chisel with sweep #1 doesn’t have any depth and will be nice for general whittling whereas a chisel’s sweep #8 is rounded in the sides of the razor and will be awesome for deep lining or narrow corners.

Getting a carving tools palm kit will be a great deal if you want to improve the look and thoroughness of your carvings but don’t know what exactly you might need. Having a broader spectrum of choice is always better than being limited by not having an instrument to do something you suddenly decided to do.

With such tools as carving tools palm gouges you’ll be able to achieve the aims that you set easier and faster than struggling with a knife sometimes can be.
