How to keep tools always sharp?
Tools have to be in proper shape and able to serve you well as long as possible. How to treat your tools so they stay sharp?
Some tools seem sharp enough when you purchase them so you might think it’s okay to use them right after. Don’t do that. If you want your tools to serve you longer - always sharpen them gently before use and after it.
When you don’t use your tools, keep them oiled and clean so they are always prepared to do the job.
When stropping your tool, run it back and forth against the strop slowly. Do it for each side of the tool. Don’t use short sharp motions - they can damage your tools.
Be very careful if you want to try another sharpening method on a power tool. It is very likely to overheat your tool and make the material of it softer or harder which makes it a totally different tool.
Designing a practical workshop area
We all know how important having a practical work area can be. Starting from inspiring you and finishing with being functional and useful, the workshop area influences a lot in your carving process. So what should it look like?
First of all, it might be a good idea to have two work areas in your house. You can have an outdoor one for bigger carvings or for better weather and an inside one for when it’s raining or if you are working on something small.
For your outside area you can have some heavy fold-out tables with a few heavy sitting benches. For the inside area you can convert your attic or garage to work in it.
Don’t forget about lighting! It’s a very important part of any workshop. Having a lot of natural light or at least white lamps that are close to that is crucial to reducing the risk of injuries and improving the quality of the carving.
Tips on staying safe while carving
There are some things to remember while carving so you stay safe and healthy and enjoy the process.
Don’t forget about safety equipment. Always have your safety tape and thumb guard with and on you while working. They help prevent a lot of traumas that can be easily avoided.
Clothes are also important. Grab your apron to protect your clothes and don’t wear anything that can get caught on tools.
Don’t risk your health by drinking some beer (or something else) while carving. Anything that can affect your judgment and speed of reaction can result in traumas.
Always sharpen your tools before carving. Working with dull tools makes you use more force to carve and that can be the reason for unexpected traumas as well.
